So you want to get married in Paris?: Part Un

Jennifer Fox

So you want to get married in Paris? Félicitations! Now that you've decided that Paris is your wedding destination, you've conquered 50% of the battle! Paris is said to be one of the most romantic cities in the world! {And I must admit, I am one lucky girl to be able to call it home!} It offers a rich cultural history, elegant venues, world class wine and gastronomic cuisine. Come discover some of the hidden treasures of Parisian venues! There are many different options for a romantic ceremony, intimate dinner or dancing reception in the City of Light. Whether it be in a garden or chapelle, a traditional church, a private Parisian apartment or on a boat cruising down the Seine, there are so many special places to exchange "I do's"!

Many couples who choose to say their "I do's" in the City of Light are looking for a classically romantic ceremony venue. The chapelle pictured on the right is dedicated to Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette. The ceremony venue on the left is located in the romantic jardin of a Paris museum, which features manicured lawns and famous the works of a French sculptor.

If you are looking for a traditional church ceremony, why not a Gothic-style church?  This particular church features high ceilings, stain glass windows, wooden pews, an organ and an English speaking clergy that honors all denominations.

Let's talk about the typical Haussman style apartment! For the couple looking to elope to the City of Light, a private Parisian apartment decorated with soft candles and rose petals is perfect for an intimate vow exchange.

The River Seine provides breathtaking backdrops if you choose to exchange vows on a private yacht. The Notre Dame, des Invalides and la Tour Eiffel can all be seen while you cruise down the Seine in boating style.

As far as the legalities of having a civil marriage in France go, they can be a bit complex. For instance, at least one of the parties to be married has to have been a resident of France for a minimum of 40 consecutive days, immediately preceding the marriage. This must be in the area where the marriage is to take place. As a solution, most couples who are not French residents will usually have a civil ceremony in their own country first and then hold a religious or symbolic ceremony in France.

Stay tuned for part deux and trois of "So you want to get married in Paris?" where I'll talk about intimate restaurant and dancing reception venues. Oh la la!!
